Kitchen Remodeling in King County

A King County kitchen remodel is usually one of two jobs: a finish upgrade that keeps the sink and the range where they are, or a layout change that moves plumbing, opens a wall, or adds an island. Most Eastside kitchens we measure were built in the 1990s or 2000s: oak or maple raised-panel cabinets, a laminate or tile counter, and a peninsula that blocks the family room. The useful question is not which photo you saved. It is how the room works at dinner, and whether the dishwasher, the fridge, and the path to the garage still make sense.

We start with a free on-site measure. We mark what stays, including hallway flooring, a window over the sink, and any wall that is holding up the floor above. You get an itemized estimate before demolition: cabinets, counters, tile, electrical, plumbing, paint, and haul-off listed on their own lines. If a wall comes out or the sink moves to another wall, we say whether that permit goes to the City of Redmond or to King County before we put a date on the calendar. A cosmetic update that leaves the plumbing in place often does not need one. We do not open the room until the cabinet order is placed, because a missing box is what turns a three-week kitchen into a two-month kitchen.

Materials we set on these jobs include plywood-box cabinets in shaker or slab doors, quartz or quartzite counters at a 3 cm edge, and porcelain or ceramic tile on the backsplash. Hinges and drawers are soft-close. Where the new floor meets hardwood or luxury vinyl in the next room, we choose the transition before the cabinets land so the dishwasher and the toe-kick still clear. Appliance swaps stay in the existing openings when the sizes match. A 36-inch range or a panel-ready dishwasher changes the cabinet run, and that change is written into the estimate instead of discovered on install day. We also plan task lighting at the counters, not only a single fixture in the middle of the ceiling.

A cabinet-and-counter upgrade that keeps the same layout typically takes two to four weeks on site once the boxes and the slab are in queue. A gut remodel that moves plumbing or opens the kitchen to the great room more often runs six to ten weeks of construction after the permit is in hand. Permit review, countertop templating after the cabinets are set, and lead time on semi-custom cabinets all sit in front of that clock. The sequence is demo, rough electrical and plumbing, drywall, paint, cabinet set, counter template, then tile and appliances, so two trades are not booked into the same morning.
